Path of Exile: A Beginner's Guide for New Players

  • For a new player, the first few hours of Path of Exile can be a confusing and frustrating experience. A lot of what developer Grinding Gear Games has put together will be familiar to anyone who has played an action role-playing game in the last twenty years, according to the company. However, appearances can be deceiving, and it doesn't take long to realize that GGG has put in a lot of effort into creating a one-of-a-kind experience for anyone brave enough to give Path of Exile a shot.

You think I'm courageous? POE Curreny is a free-form design that allows players to create a unique character from hundreds of skills, in contrast to a genre filled with games that hold your hand by providing stereotypical character classes with limited character choices. As a result of this freedom, players have the potential to make grave mistakes, leaving them with little choice but to start over with a completely new character.

Each new layer in Path of Exile adds a new facet to your character's design, and each new layer builds on the previous one. In this beginner's guide, we'll go over the basics of the first few layers of the onion. We hope that by having a clear understanding of how these first decisions fit together, we can make your first few hours a more pleasant experience. Exile, you've arrived in Wraeclast!

Choosing a League to Play in
When you create your character, the first decision you will have to make is which League you want to participate in. There are several options available, each of which provides a slightly different experience, making it critical to select the most appropriate one for you.

Standard League is a type of football league that is played on a regular basis.
The Standard League has been around since the beginning of the game, and it is the most basic of all the game modes. Other characters you meet on your journeys may already be extremely powerful in their own right. There is a well-established economy, and almost anything can be purchased for a reasonable price. A price that you will most likely be unable to afford for some time.

    League of Challengers
Every few months or so, a new Challenge League in poe items will begin to play. These temporary leagues return all players to a level playing field, complete with level one characters and a fresh start in their respective economies. From there, it's a race against time (or a leisurely stroll through the game's main story) to finish the main story and play through the end-game content before the next reset. Following the conclusion of the league, all characters are relegated to the Standard League, where they will be used in future games. Path of Exile's challenge leagues are also the means by which Grinding Gear Games introduces new game mechanics to the game. These can range from one-of-a-kind encounters to completely new crafting mechanics. At the conclusion of the league, the new mechanics are typically integrated into the core game, though they may undergo significant revisions before being integrated into the game.

Leagues for the most ardent fans
A Hardcore option is available in both the Standard and Challenge Leagues. In this pseudo-permadeath league, your character only has one life to live, and you must use it wisely. When you die, your character is not permanently exiled to the Standard League, where he or she will never be seen or heard from again.

    Self-Discovery by a Single Individual
Solo Self-Found (SSF) is an option available in both Standard and Challenge Leagues. Whereas PoE can be played with little to no group interaction, SSF completely isolates your character from any interaction with other characters. There is no grouping. There will be no trading. It's just you and Wraeclast against everything he has to throw at you.

    Primary Characteristics
When it comes to the game's primary attributes, Path of Exile keeps things simple. Any veteran role-player would be able to figure out the fundamentals of the three attributes - strength increases your health and damage, intelligence increases your mana pool, and dexterity is a measure of your agility - without much difficulty. Those descriptions are accurate; however, to be more specific, every 10 points earned in an attribute will result in the following bonuses being awarded:

An additional five maximum lives as well as a 2% increase in physical damage are gained by using the Strength (red) skill. Intelligence (blue) grants you an additional five maximum mana as well as a 2% increase in your energy shield's effectiveness. Your Dexterity (green) rating will increase by 20 points, increasing your accuracy (both melee and ranged) and giving you a 2% increase in your evasion rating.

Life, represented by the large red orb on the bottom left of the user interface, is exactly what you would expect it to be - it represents the amount of damage you can take before dying and is represented by the letter e. Gear that increases your armor stat can help you avoid incoming damage, while gear that increases your evasion rating can help you avoid damage in the first place.

Some of you may be wondering where your energy shield fits into your overall defense strategy. When playing Path of Exile, your energy shield serves as more than just a magical barrier against incoming missile weapons or spells; it also serves as a secondary hitpoint pool that must be depleted before you can take any further damage to your health or life. Although your energy shield only lasts a fraction of your life, it is a valuable resource because it regenerates on its own.

Due to the fact that a red orb represents your life, it should be obvious that the large blue orb represents your mana. As you might expect, aside from the basic auto-attack of your weapon, mana is the source of power for all of your combat abilities, whether they are melee, ranged, or spell-based. However, mana in World of Warcraft serves a greater purpose than that. Keeping a portion of your mana pool reserved is necessary for some of the more powerful skills, such as auras, and there are character builds that make use of mana to reduce damage taken into consideration. Mana is always in high demand, so it's a good thing that mana regenerates quickly after a brief lapse in time.

In addition to the stat increases mentioned above, improving your primary attributes allows you to equip more powerful equipment. Whether it's a new sword, armor, ring, or gem, each item will have a minimum set of attributes that must be met in order for it to be used. Some of the most powerful items in Path of Exile will require the use of multiple attributes to be effective, so keep this in mind as your character advances in the game.
